Does Fast
Estimate use coding for items or resources?
There
are many estimating systems that rely on coding to structure libraries
and bill items. This has some benefits to estimators (especially
if they are using the product constantly and can remember the
codes by heart), but the benefits are actually mostly for the
developer since it makes file structures much simpler and therefore
the functions on these files simpler. However the cost is in loss
of flexibility and the overheads of having to add codes to everything.
When
we set out to design Fast Estimate our view was that most users
will not benefit from a coding system, basically because it requires
substantial planning and can be difficult to change once implemented.
It can also take time to add codes to resources and items. So
although files become more complex, we believe the flexibility
offered by Fast Estimate greatly outweighs any advantages offered
by enforcing a coding system on users. We hope you agree.
Note:
We do offer one code option, the Product Code in resources. However
this is not mandatory.
